You need to disconnect the nitro and reconnect CO2 to the keg between sessions. If your gas disconnect leaks when not connected (it should be replaced, but it's sometimes difficult to tell when it's a slow leak) you'll lose an expensive tank of gas if you haven't shut off the flow at the tank. Hey mate, I have a 9.5l keg of stout and all the gear. A normal 19l keg I’ll go 40psi x 48hrs. I see the nitro beers need low carbonation so am thinking 24hrs at 30psi for the 9.5 keg. Then bleed down, add the nitro at 25psi and pour a beer, sound ok?!? I'm no expert on the rapid carbonation. I do set and forget. Nitro pressure is a function of line length, beer viscosity and desired flow rate through the restrictor plate (1L/min). You want about 30s to pour a pint. Adjust pressure until your flow is about that fast. 20 psi is a good starting point to work up from. It's a bit more fiddly to work downward. I found I needed a higher pressure for the commercial stout (very protein rich) vs my own stout (lighter body) for the same result.

I’ll start at 20 and work up if needed. Night shift the next two nights so i have to wait til Sunday to set it up and try it out. Will post pics of not horrible looking haha!

So I fucked it already. Got hoses all connected up with QDs etc, I wound the reg right out so that when I connected it, it wouldn’t be under a lot of pressure. I screwed it on, all seemed well. I then tried to wind up the pressure, nothing. The spindle went down but the gauge didn’t move. I went back and forth and managed to get pressure, happy days. I then tried to adjust it down but the spindle just kind of rotated, and nothing happened. I removed the black handle and noticed it looked as though the spindle thread was stripped, as it was just rotating, not screwing down. Gauge was now zero. I used a shifter on the square section of the spindle and manged to screw it down, but when I vented the QD, nothing. I played around with it but the spindle is now pretty much jammed up.
I’m double fucked because if I take the reg off, the bottle will be empty. An expensive and disappointing morning!!!!!
But I’m not giving up, I’m going to try the KL reg and a new bottle and try again when the bits get here.

If you haven't lost any gas during this process then the bottle should still be full. You won't lose it by taking the regulator off, if you are quick.
Protip: have a look at the regulator bell where it attaches to the bottle. There's a tiny vent hole there. Point the vent hole and both ends of the bottle away from you when you unscrew the reg.

No. The nipple on the top is a valve. The regulator has a little pin that presses it open then you screw it tight. You should still have most of a tank.

New reg arrived. I hope to pour one tonight after work. Managed to not drink anymore from the keg so just need to swap the reg and try again. Looking forward to it very much

2nd and 3rd pints I bumped pressure up to 35psi, the creamy head seemed to last longer. It did eventually get smaller but there was still some head by the end of the glass and great lacing. It would be cool to have that thick pillowy head last all the way, any tips?. I carbed it very low, though I think it could’ve been a touch more. I reckon I’ve got 3-4 more pints in there (9.5L keg ) and I’m off so I left the nitro hooked up for tonight. Very happy, I have a cube of mild that will go through next and will be brewing a boddingtons type beer today. If I’m still enjoying it when the little bottles run out I might look at a bottle of 70/30

You just steep them in warm water and strain the result in right before your boil. You probably won't need much. 50g of med/dark crystal and 50g of carafoam steeped in 500ml of water sounds like it might be all you'll need to push it over the edge. If youre going AG then aim to mash slightly hotter (68-70) to increase the body of the beer a bit. You can also add some flaked barley to your mash to get some extra protein, and of course oats if you're aiming for an oatmeal stout.

It’s not bad head retention, it’s just not a whole pillow like head all the way down like you usually see with nitro beers that’s all haha. I always mash low, regardless of beer style as I prefer dry and drinkable, but a good point. Very happy with it, much appreciate your advice mate!

Our cat is not so into that but her older 'brother', (sadly deceased as of 2 years ago) had a fucking radar for chicken. Even in his older years when he was completely blind and curled up in the bedroom, he'd magically appear the moment I'd take a whole, raw chicken from the freezer to defrost. Sit down for dinner and without fail, he'd appear, sit nearby, look with head tilted and gently, but expectantly, push out his paw. He also chased and caught a bird on the window curtains in front of me, while blind so he had some magic shit going on. Strange creatures, love them a lot. Both have 'helped' me with brewing on many occasions

Once glassware is properly clean and beer conditioned, the head is tight and laces from top to bottom.

Lacing goes all the way down no problem, I just want a raft an inch thick all the way 😂. Next nitro I’ll carb up a little more. Just brewed a boddo’s inspired ale ( much too dark though haha ) that will go on the nitro and have a mild that will be next. I’m loving it

Just some random info. I must be close to finishing the keg. I’ve left the nitro hooked up, because I drank so many pints I didn’t think it’d last long. The longer the nitro is set up, the more it seems to “cascade”. It may have lost some carb, but I can’t tell, and it’s delicious. Still on my original bottle, and have another one, so I’ll be putting more brews through the nitro for sure. Big thumbs up from me!!

Drinking a Bodington type bitter now. Very happy, will probably look into a 70/30 bottle in the future. Set n forget !
I slightly upped the carbonation from the first batch and poured lots of foam. I just turned the nitro down and it’s better. I’ll go back to my original carb level next batch, 30 psi x 24hrs.

Nitro IIPA?! The bitter I’m drinking is 31 IBU for 1.031 OG. Firm but smooth on the nitro. Hoppy beers aren’t meant to as good on the nitro but I reckon they’d be fine. Is your IIPA on nitro???

Thanks, Dave Edit: My numbers were off... didn't realise while typing on the phone. Pick a carbonation volume level, get a CO2 pressure for it and then multiply it by the gas ratio. A 70/30 N2/CO2 mix is usual, but check the mix ratio of your gas. 60/40 and 50/50 are available too. E.g for about 2.2 volumes @2c you want 7.2psi (0.48 bar) CO2, so you want (7.2 × (1+70/30)) = 24 psi of 70/30 gas as a starter. Adjust up and down to preference. Of course, someone more well versed in the physics will tell me that's not how it works exactly because the different gasses have different properties but it's been close enough for my pouring to start with those numbers and tweak up/down slightly. Adjust your line length to get the right flow rate through the restrictor tap. IIRC I have 4M of 5mm beer line for my pure N2 tap at 20psi to get the rate I want. Start longer and trim if you find it's too slow increase the pressure if you want more carbonation. Experiment.

The other thing you want to check is whether your pressure will actually cream through the tap properly or not. The way my tap is (intertap), there's a certain minimum pressure required to seal the creamer plate against the o-ring and actually force the beer through the holes. YMMV but I doubt 24psi would work for me. Typically I run mine higher at 30 to 35 psi and I get good results, not overly heady but that nice cascading effect. Line length is the same as my normal taps, so yeah around 4m of 5mm ID line.

Hi David. I run 20psi pure nitro on an intertap with good effect. I think the pressure to make it work is more a function of the beer rather than the creamer plate.
I needed considerably more pressure with a heavy body commercial stout than with my medium body home made stout.

If I’m still enjoying it when the little bottles run out I might look at a bottle of 70/30 For head retention, look at adding high protein malts (dark crystal, carafoam, etc) to your grist. Last nitro bitter had a nice raft most of the way down the glass. I made sure to disconnect nitro and reconnect C02 between sessions and I think this may have been it. I was lazy and just leaving the nitro hooked up. I fucking love bitter on nitro haha !
