Hi there, I started to search for a beerstone topic on here, and found a few that related to how to clean or remove beerstone, however my question is more related to whether this keg has beerstone or not, and if not, what could it be After researching and thinking about starting to pressure ferment, and on the feedback of another member, I'm considering having a dedicated dry hop keg. I happen to have a corny keg that I was given to me when I purchased five kegs from a mate, that externally has seen better days (the black handles have been destroyed to put it mildly) so I thought why not put it to good use. I opened up the keg and the keg internal is covering in this white etching, and I am wondering whether it is beerstone or something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Crafty

I have got something similar in one of three OB kegs. You cant buy these OB kegs I've got just for reference sake (18lt versions of shiny grenade kegs) Its just odd that one of three of the same has that look too and its very course and grip to the touch like an etched surface. Not like smooth polished exteriors. Like the other two kegs, or kegs in general the interior is not usually shiny but its smooth enough surface etc.
All I can think is it needs finishing/polishing. I wouldn't want to go through that process. The pic also resembles mineral salt buildup, may be a part of it too. Try a strong dilution of citric acid spot test. Let a puddle sit for a day and see if that spot polishes clean. I don't think it will but not much to lose.

What was the keg used for last? Hey Lyrebird, I believe it was only used with beer. It was a mate who decided he needed to stop drinking so I grabbed all five of his kegs and he mentioned he had this one as well but never used it because the rubber top was destroyed and the rubber base was starting to crack. I'm guessing that it probably hasnt had anything in the keg for close to 5 years.

Thanks hawesy. I'll look into where I can source these products. Cheers PBW is (mildly?) Caustic. Dishwasher powder is fairly strongly caustic. Wear gloves and eye protection. CLR for the acidic. Its a mix of lactic and surfactants. Starsan is a mix of phosphoric and surfactants. Either should work, but rinse thoroughly. You've probably got at least one from each column in your kit already.

Or you can just buy straight caustic at coles or woolies for about 3 bucks.
Take precautions, especially if using hot.
It's effective but nasty.
