Was checking how much EKG I had in the hop freezer this morning and thought it might be time for a clean out.
Some packs are just the last few grams so I would just ditch them, but other packs are still quite full - some of these might be 4 or 5 years old. It seems a pity to throw them out if they could be used in some way. Obviously if they were to be used in some way they would need a smell test to make sure they hadn't gone cheesy.
I wonder whether they're any good for using in lambics where aged hops are sometimes used.
Anyway after recommendations or peoples experiences. Keep or ditch?
How were they stored? If they're not vac seal and kept frozen I'd ditch. If vac seal frozen if they were a decent storageable hop. HSI. Like Magnum or Warrior just for bittering. Then again using small bittering quantities could take you years to use them up. You could mash them for an experiment. Maybe not a bad idea for a sour? It gets very little IBU you could throw it all in.
Have been stored in the freezer in the normal hop clipseal style bags in an airtight plastic container. I think I'll just ditch the packs that have only a few grams and hold onto the other packs - I'm due to brew some more lambic to top up my solera keg so sounds like they'll be handy for that.
If you follow "Shut up about Barclay Perkins" blog you'll note that many British breweries in the 20th Century used old hops in their bitters. I was in a similar situation to you when I did a "hoptake" last year and combined a lot of my old UK hops... some as old as 2013 - into a mixed "pommy hop mix" to get about half a kilo, and have since used them for bittering - and made some of my best UK efforts so far.
My mix is mostly Fuggles, EKG, some First Gold and even a touch of Glacier and Willamette. I took a good guess at an average of 4.4 AA. I'd overstocked to buggery on EKG because I'd just bought "Bronzed Brews" which would have been in 2016 and most of them were previous years crop.
Note that I keep my hops in a freeezer so it may differ if just kept fridged.
