I've wrapped the submersible with shade cloth. They wont handle bits of ice through the impeller etc. You need to consider, how much ya wanna spend? How much ya wanna pump? how fast? Then get the best for that price etc.
I got a (cheap) larger dirty water pump to dunk into my 1000lt IBC rain water tank thats right near my brew boil area. Recycled back to the tank, no water wastage. If I need to chill lower i will connect the mains water that is colder (being underground) that will run back into the rainwater tank too if there is room.
I make Lager in colder months only. To chill brew to lager temps in summer is a carnt (pun intended) Big tubs or buckets off chilled ice etc is too hard IMO.
I bought a $20 jobby from Bunnings and it's worked just fine sitting in an ice slurry for circulating through and immersion chiller, if that helps. Been a great piece of kit, actually. Will now use it to pump chilled water through my flooded font as well.
Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of craft, but those that be of swill.
For pre chill something middle range should do the job, with any pump any solid should be filtered, I mean how's the family car going to go with sand in the engine. Yeah it's best left out ..... same with pumps even if they're rated for solids.
grumpypaul: So it would seem you can edit the Shoutbox comments of other users.....Not that I would ever do such a thing.
