My parents got my wife and I a Google Home for christmas, with one of those plugs that connect to wi-fi (to turn things on/off at power) I've also got a Tilt2 (if that can do anytihng with it)
Does anyone have any ideas if there is anything I could use the Home for, to help out with homebrewing? I'm not really across its capabilities so don't know where to start

omg haha. Sorry. The science fiction coming true. Can you change its name? Like, (computer) on Star Trek. Or Hal (2001) etc. Order it to make (Tea. Hot!) Were not there yet. Cant help my first thoughts though. Its just another device to monitor people. I don't think we are there yet as in being good enough voice recognition wise. It would be pretty cool though if we were. I would be wary to have it auto interact with anything important. It could misinterpret any noise or words and resultant cook or freeze your brew!

Trying to be more constructive. Have you tested it out at all? I would at least to see how well its voice recognition works. If its like voice operated services for auto phone call uses up to date etc. Then not good so far. I think it could be quite entertaining even for the misinterpretations.

My mate has sold his sole to Google (home) ... he can open his garage door - "google, open garage door" ... turn on lights etc. You know google is listening to everything you say ... (insert conspiracy theory here ... ) .

I’ve got the small speaker one and it works really well. It’ll play any digital radio, Spotify etc. My son asks it stupid questions which frees up a lot of my time. I’ve got Chromecast cast on the tv but it’s easier to cast from my phone rather than asking google to play something. The voice recognition is really good but I’m not sure how you could use it for brewing except simple turn on/off commands.

I don't get all the conspiracy stuff. The Chinese already know everything that goes on, might as well let Google know too. I have one as well, as I understand it, you won't be able to integrate unless Google supports the app officially

You basically register your voice and it will know you in a crowded room or with the TV blaring. Mmmm…probably means google will know when I visit other places with a device. Shit I can see this being a virtual assistant in the future that will pop up your assistant with your knowledge base anywhere without needing a personal device. Big brother…next it will be social credits!

Self Fulfilling Prophecies. That's the nice way of saying it. Conspiracy theories is dirt talk. In reality. You are all part of the Matrix.

I have a google home and love it. It's so handy.
Would love to see it more involved in brewing aspects.
And a couple things, the voice recognition is spot on. So much better than Siri.
I am of the opinion you are all already being monitored. You have rocks in your head if you think you aren't.

Every smart device that has voice recognition is listening to everything we say. And who knows what that's being used for.

If you are worried about the 'spying' aspect, just know that your phone most likely has the same capabilities - likely more. I have an Alexa, works ok for things like checking the weather but I don't use it for much else. If you are in someone else's house it's fun to set multiple alarms at all times of the night/morning

If my Huawei phone (currently buying another non-Chinese phone) isn't wanting to shut down, alls I have to say is "stupid Chinese spyphone, damn government won't let me restart it" and that will usually cause the phone to shut down.
After we moved back from China, we had all sorts of weird stuff happening with our phones, so when this whole Huawei spy thing came up, we weren't surprised. I still get notifications from the Chinese version of play store, long after I uninstalled it.
But Instagram has a setting too, where you have to burrow down to turn the mike off. All phones are capable of it, it's just you hope that insta or google have less nefarious uses for said info.

If not for brewing, what do you guys use the Home for?
if anyone wants to listen in on us, they'll just hear my wife talking about her day at work and me yelling at inanimate objects not doing what I wanted them to. Good luck to them...

I can attest to how good google is at voice recognition. My 8yo son sometimes doesn't speak clearly and sometimes has a bit of a stutter. We have some old mobile phones that we let them play games on (with time limits). They don't usually use the voice recognition part of google but the other day I hear him say "Google, show me a picture of a hedgehog". You can imagine how quickly I ran and grabbed the phone off him thinking it would show him pictures of some adult content that rhymes with hedgehog - but sure enough it had heard him correctly. Phew. In any case I've told him to type his searches in as google doesn't always hear things right.

If not for brewing, what do you guys use the Home for? I use it for everything. It's in our kitchen, and so I use it for timers when I am cooking, I have our shopping list on their and that way I can just ask google to add something to our shopping list. It's also good, you can ask for a recipe and will prompt you for all the ingredients and then step by step how to make it. Also weather. I have hooked it up to our Logitech remote so I can turn the tv on with voice. Kids use it to ask Google to tell jokes. My oldest son has just bought a google mini to use as his alarm as he didn't like the brightness of the clock radio (and all technology is removed from their rooms at bedtime). I could probably live without it, but currently finding it really useful and finding more and more features all the time.

Well that's an eye opener! I just thought it was because with someone with speech problems, hedgehog could sound like headjob.

It's funny because of the bald comment and then an ad with David Koch below it.

the timer feature is pretty handy for mash timing, hop additions etc Depending on what you are after you may be able to set up IFTTT to connect to other services but i havent really got any brewing related endpoints i can use here. The tilt doesnt really connect to wifi so you'd have to use something like tiltpi running on a raspberry pi to get the data out and into something where IFTTT can then see it. this is kinda useful, goes into how to set up IFTTT logging data from the tilt via tiltpi. from there you could maybe pull up a custom action in the home to ask what the current gravity or temperature on the tilt is... www.shirt-pocket.com/blog/index.php/shadedgrey/comments/relax_have_a_homebrew/

It’s not about spying it’s about privacy and data. Not a conspiracy either, and it is a little naive to frame it as that. There are whole industrial ecosystems based on collecting, aggregating and exploiting data. Happy to post links when I have more that one hand free.

If you had one of electric brewing's new networked touch screen controllers you could possibly kick off a named brewing cycle or change/call up ferment temps on a specific fermenter or for that matter any named data (temperature, time setting etc). Crazy shit like this will be how our kids brew.
